How Seniors and the Elderly Can Keep Cool in Summer’s Hot Months

Schedule a Tour Today!

Now that summer’s heat is upon us in its full fury, seniors and the elderly should take precautions to make sure they stay hydrated and healthy.

The outdoors beckon during the summer. Families get together for picnics and grilling. Trips to the beach or golf, tennis, or pickleball games. There’s concerts and parades and a host of other activities.

But there’s potentially dangers from extended exposure to the sun and it’s broiling heat. Sunburn, heat stress and exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration and other problems can affect seniors and the elderly in the short-term and longer as well.

Take these precautions to help avoid heat-related health problems.

—Stay hydrated. Drinking water should be a habit that starts when you wake up and continues through the day. Water helps keep you cool and is essential for your health. Avoid alcohol and caffeine that act as diuretics and drain your body of vital liquids.

—If it’s too hot, stay inside. Avoid the hottest parts of the day by staying indoors in cool, air conditioned spaces in your assisted living community. Being outdoors in the morning or evenings is better than being out in the heat of the day. Watch the weather forecasts and current temperatures so you can avoid particularly steamy days.

—Apply sunscreen. If you’re going outside, plan ahead and apply sunscreen an hour before you are in the sun’s rays. Apply sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Also, keep applying sunscreen during the day. It’s a good idea to apply sunscreen every two hours.

—Learn about your prescriptions and medications. Read the labels and check the warnings. If something raises questions for you, check with your doctor or medical professional. Some prescriptions may cause you to be more susceptible to the sun and its harmful effects.

—Wear sunglasses that protect your eyes. The bright summer sun is no illusion. Seniors and the elderly may have eyes that are more sensitive to light and sun’s harmful rays. Wearing sunglasses helps lower your risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Also, wear sunglasses that wrap around your eyes to protect against UVA and UVB radiation.

—Wear lightweight clothing. Summer is the time to wear clothes that are light-colored and breathable. Think 100% cotton fabrics. Also, wear layers. You can take off outer layers as the day’s temperatures rise. Long-sleeve shirts that are breathable are a good idea along with wide-brimmed hats.
